EMICERT, a leader in the CO₂ verification market, actively participated once again in Posidonia 2024, the premier international maritime exhibition held at Athens Metropolitan Expo from June 3–7.
As part of its presence, EMICERT hosted a high-level panel discussion titled “EU Fit for 55: Challenges and Opportunities for European and Greek Shipping.” The panel featured the following key speakers:
Petros Kokkalis, Member of the European Parliament (Kosmos)
Michalis Angelopoulos, Candidate for European Parliament (New Democracy)
Panagiotis Dimopoulos, Candidate for European Parliament (PASOK – KINAL)
Moderator: Kostas Antoniadis, Managing Partner and Co-founder of EMICERT
The discussion centered around the upcoming challenges that the shipping industry must face due to the “Fit for 55” legislative package. The panel also highlighted the emerging opportunities for Greek shipping at both the national and EU levels.
During his remarks, Mr. Antoniadis emphasized:
“The coming months will be particularly demanding for the shipping sector. In this context, the presence of accredited verification bodies is essential to achieving sustainability goals. To ensure fair compliance, market distortions must be addressed, as they currently increase the cost burden on shipping companies.”
Key points from the panelists included:
Petros Kokkalis:
“I believe in the strength of Greek shipping and its ability to innovate and adapt to new challenges. I am confident it will thrive under the new climate conditions.”
Michalis Angelopoulos:
“Sustainability must be approached horizontally across Europe and beyond party lines. A dedicated EU Commissioner for the Environment is essential. Greek shipping must be a top EU priority.”
Panagiotis Dimopoulos:
“Greece is lagging behind in climate and sustainability goals. Greek shipping, a cornerstone of the national economy, must lead the country’s path toward a green transition.”
Alongside the panel discussion, EMICERT unveiled for the first time EmiCO₂ntrol, its innovative digital platform developed for calculating CO₂ emissions in maritime transport. This launch demonstrated EMICERT’s ongoing commitment to environmental accountability and digital innovation.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors had the opportunity to meet the EMICERT team and explore the company’s latest CO₂ verification services and technological tools.
EMICERT’s presence at Posidonia 2024 reaffirmed its role as a trusted partner in CO₂ verification and showcased its expertise on key issues shaping the maritime industry—at a critical turning point in the sector’s journey toward sustainability.
